FIRST Lego League 2025

When Young Inventors Create Amazing Things

This year, just like last year, we once again had the privilege of serving as judges at the FIRST Lego League – an experience that impressed us all over again!

The Road to the Finals

The first preliminary round began in early February, where 66 participating teams competed to qualify for the finals. The grand finale took place on April 27, 2025, as part of the YEP! Schoulfoire at LuxExpo.

What is the FIRST Lego League?

For those who don't know: The FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an internationally recognized educational program that playfully introduces children and young people between 9 and 16 years old to science and technology. What makes it special is the combination of teamwork, creativity, and innovative problem-solving approaches – all within the framework of exciting competitions featuring LEGO robots.

The Four Pillars of the Competition

The FLL is based on four essential elements:

  1. Robot Game: Teams construct and program an autonomous LEGO robot (usually using LEGO SPIKE or EV3) that must complete complex tasks on a specialized playing field.

  2. Innovation Project: Each team researches a real-world topic that changes annually and presents their own innovative solution to a jury.

  3. Core Values: Team spirit, fairness, respect, and fun are central – because nothing works without collaboration.

  4. Technical Assessment: The jury evaluates creativity, design, and programming of the robot.

Our Day as Jury Members

As judges for the Robot Game, our task was to evaluate the completed missions, assign points, and calculate the results. At the finals at YEP!, all teams started from zero – all points previously earned in the qualification rounds were reset, and everything was scored anew. This applied to both the Robot Game as well as the Innovation Project and other assessment categories.

Here you can see all missions, and how they can be solved:

Impressive Achievements from Young Participants

It quickly became clear that we were dealing with the 24 best teams. All participants were exceptionally well-prepared. Many teams had brought multiple additional parts to achieve maximum scores on the game table. It was both amazing and delightful to see the resourcefulness of these young people between 9 and 16 years of age.

A First-Class Event

The event attracted numerous visitors as it was held in conjunction with the YEP! Schoulfoire. This provided the teams with a larger audience. Particularly impressive was the specially built arena with grandstands, which elevated the entire event to an even more professional level.

Musical Highlight

A special highlight occurred during the break between Robot Games: Laura Thorn, Luxembourg's representative for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, performed. The arena was filled to capacity as she presented her song "La poupée monte le son." We're already looking forward to the ESC, where we hope to receive some "twelve points."

The Competition and Award Ceremony

After the break, the competition continued until shortly after 4:00 PM, with teams trying to achieve the highest possible score in a total of three scoring rounds (plus one practice round). Around 5:00 PM, the grand award ceremony took place. The "youngITeam" from Lycée Aline Mayrisch ultimately emerged as the overall winner of the FIRST LEGO League 2024-2025. Additionally, several other prizes were awarded for outstanding performances in various categories.

Conclusion and Outlook

We congratulate all teams that participated in this year's FIRST Lego League!

If you've also become interested in this event – whether for yourself, your class, or your school – you have the opportunity to register for the next edition.

It was a fantastic event, and we're already looking forward to the 2025-2026 edition!
