FIRST LEGO League 2026/27 in Luxembourg: BIOGLOW, 129 Teams and a New Generation of Robotics
The FIRST LEGO League is heading into an exceptional season in Luxembourg. BIOGLOW™ puts biodiversity at the heart of 2026/27, while the Robot Game is also undergoing a major technological change. According to the organisers, 129 teams are registered in Luxembourg, meaning the qualification rounds will be held over five days for the first time.
129 teams and five days of qualification rounds
The qualification rounds will take place from Monday 22 to Friday 26 February 2027 at Forum Geesseknäppchen. The national final will follow on Sunday 18 April 2027 at Luxexpo.
Qualification rounds: 22–26 February 2027 – Forum Geesseknäppchen
National final: 18 April 2027 – Luxexpo
Season theme: BIOGLOW™ – Biodiversity
129 registered teams in Luxembourg
For comparison, 90 teams took part in the 2026 qualification rounds – already the largest Luxembourg qualifier at that time. The increase to 129 teams shows just how strongly the competition continues to grow in the country.

BIOGLOW: biodiversity takes centre stage
BIOGLOW™ is part of the worldwide FIRST CANOPY 2026/27 season. Teams explore the diversity of life on our planet: species, habitats and the question of how the balance between nature and human activity can be protected.
Alongside the Robot Game, the Innovation Project remains a central part of the competition. Participants research a real-world issue, develop their own solution and then present their work to a panel of judges.

What is different from previous years?
This is where the season’s biggest change comes in. Internationally, FIRST LEGO League 2026/27 offers two formats in parallel: the Founders Edition and the new Future Edition.
Until now: SPIKE and an autonomous robot
The classic Robot Game, now known as the Founders Edition, is based on LEGO Education SPIKE. Each team builds and programs a SPIKE Prime robot that aims to complete missions on the game field as autonomously as possible during a match of around two and a half minutes. This is the format familiar to many participants, coaches, referees and judges from previous seasons.
New: Computer Science & AI and wireless hardware
The Future Edition is based on LEGO Education Computer Science & AI. Teams build and program wireless hardware and complete missions in a new interactive, alliance-based game. Collaboration is therefore built even more directly into the game design.
Importantly, SPIKE is not disappearing everywhere in 2026/27. The Founders Edition and Future Edition will initially run in parallel. LEGO Education will also continue to support SPIKE and legacy hardware during the 2027/28 season. From 2028/29, the new LEGO League is expected to run entirely on the Computer Science & AI platform.

2026/27 also marks the end of an era
BIOGLOW™ will be the final season jointly run by FIRST and LEGO Education. Their long-standing partnership, which introduced millions of children and young people to robotics and STEM, will come to an end after 2026/27.
This does not mean the end of the competition. From August 2027, LEGO Education will launch its successor programme, LEGO® League. The first 2027/28 season is expected to support both teams using older SPIKE/legacy hardware and teams using Computer Science & AI. From 2028/29, Computer Science & AI will become the sole technical platform.

Volunteers and judges wanted
With 129 teams and five qualification days, the need for volunteers is also increasing. People can support FIRST LEGO League in areas such as judging, the Robot Game or event organisation.
Serving as a judge offers a particularly interesting perspective on the competition: teams explain their projects, their technical decisions and how they approached the challenge. Anyone interested in supporting the Luxembourg 2026/27 edition can contact SCRIPT directly.
Good to know: youth leave may be available
In Luxembourg, people volunteering for this type of youth activity may be able to apply for youth leave (congé-jeunesse) under certain conditions. Whether a specific role at FIRST LEGO League is eligible should be checked in advance with SCRIPT or the Service national de la jeunesse (SNJ); approval is not automatic.
Without a recognised youth leader qualification or an equivalent qualification, two thirds of the requested days are generally taken into account. For example, three requested days would correspond to two days. Guichet.lu lists equivalent professional qualifications including educator, teacher or professor, pedagogue, socio-educational worker and DAP Education.
The complete application should be submitted at least three weeks before the activity begins.
